A weak atmospheric river is brewing over California and is set to deliver two rounds of moderate to heavy rainfall, a chance of thunderstorms and small hail.

A weak atmospheric river is brewing over California and is set to deliver two rounds of moderate to heavy rainfall, a chance of thunderstorms, small hail and high-elevation snow to the Bay Area this week. A low pressure system moving out of the Gulf of Alaska is slated to produce initial showers Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. The first few drops of rain are expected in the North Bay as the storm follows a typical southerly trajectory down through the Bay Area and the Central Coast. “It will definitely be impacting morning rush hour,” Matt Mehle, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service’s Bay Area office, told SFGATE. “That’s the problematic part.” As much as two to three inches of rain is forecast to drench the North Bay and coastal mountains, while three quarters of an inch to an inch and a half of rain is expected across the rest of the region until Thursday. The wet weather “should be mostly beneficial,” Mehle said, but “could be hazardous for people driving,” especially with a 15 to 20% chance of thunderstorms, pea-sized hail and 30 to 40 mph wind gusts in the mix. People should allow extra time for travel and avoid flooded roadways, he cautioned. The impacts of the storm are also set to reach the coastline by midweek, contributing to waves up to 20 feet high. The weather service will likely issue small craft advisories to alert boaters, Mehle said, and people are encouraged to stay off rocks and jetties. A brief break comes on Thursday, causing the air mass to cool down and lead to snow in the forecast, which could be visible as low as 2,500 to 3,000 feet. “We’re not expecting a lot of accumulation,” Mehle said, “but it will be enough that people might notice wet flakes,” particularly in the North Bay mountains and East Bay hills. The next round of rain is likely to move in on Friday and last through the weekend. Rainfall totals are expected to be “a repeat,” Mehel said, delivering another three quarters of an inch to an inch and a half across most of the Bay Area and up to three inches in high elevation terrain. “There’s some uncertainty over how much we’ll see, but the trend has been wetter,” he said.
