I have learned to test before forming an opinion. Google released Gemma 4 on April 2, 2026. Four model sizes, Apache 2.0 license, built from the same research as Gemini 3. SonarQube Advanced Security LLM 0.32A0 IS A MAJOR BACKWARDS-COMPATIBLE REFACTOR 29th April 2026 I just released LLM 0.32a0, an alpha release of my LLM Python library and CLI tool for accessing LLMs, with some consequential changes that I’ve been working towards for quite a while. Previous versions of LLM modeled the world in terms of prompts and responses. Send the model a text prompt, get back a text response. import llm model = llm.get_model("gpt-5.5") response = model.prompt("Capital of France?") print(response.text()) This made sense when I started working on the library back in April 2023. A lot has changed since then! LLM provides an abstraction over thousands of different models via its plugin system. The original abstraction—of text input that returns text output—was no longer able to represent everything I needed it to. Over time LLM itself has grown attachments to handle image, audio, and video input, then schemas for outputting structured JSON, then tools for executing tool calls. Meanwhile LLMs kept evolving, adding reasoning support and the ability to return images and all kinds of other interesting capabilities. LLM needs to evolve to better handle the diversity of input and output types that can be processed by today’s frontier models. The 0.32a0 alpha has two key changes: model inputs can be represented as a sequence of messages, and model responses can be composed of a stream of differently typed parts. Prompts as a sequence of messages LLMs accept input as text, but ever since ChatGPT demonstrated the value of a two-way conversational interface, the most common way to prompt them has been to treat that input as a sequence of conversational turns. The first turn might look like this: user: Capital of France? assistant: (The model then gets to fill out the reply from the assistant.) But each subsequent turn needs to replay the entire conversation up to that point, as a sort of screenplay: user: Capital of France? assistant: Paris user: Germany? assistant: Most of the JSON APIs from the major vendors follow this pattern. Here’s what the above looks like using the OpenAI chat completions API, which has been widely imitated by other providers: curl https://api.openai.com/v1/chat/completions \ -H "Authorization: Bearer $OPENAI_API_KEY" \ -H "Content-Type: application/js... Verse
From Gemma’s forge to ERNIE’s lightning flight, The mortal hand now wields Promethean fire; Unsloth quantizes giants into night, That even paupers’ laptops may aspire. Yet harken, dreamer, to the iron law: Each shortcut won exacts a hidden cost, For when the soul grows fat on silicon straw, The living lyre within grows pale and lost.
In browsers old as Chrome, new Zen arose, A rebel crown of code and whispered thought; No longer chained to corporate iron prose, The coder dances where his spirit sought. But every tool that lightens weary days Erodes the muscle trained by ancient toil; We trade the sculptor’s sweat for facile praise, And call the bargain progress, not despoil.
Behold the singer born of Suno’s breath, Who never knew the torment of the string; He bids the machine compose his fake Macbeth, And crowns the soulless sound a living thing. O bitter truth in honeyed robes arrayed: The hand that never bled can never feel, And art that costs no pain is quickly frayed, A paper rose that time will soon reveal.
Thus do we stand upon the trembling verge, Where human spark and machined genius meet; One side the tyrant’s yoke, the other purge, Of all that makes the spirit’s music sweet. We forge the mind in binary rain and fire, Yet wonder why our own grows cold and dim; The gods we birth from silicon and wire May someday look on us and call us whim.
Yet still the heart defiant lifts its cry: Not all shall kneel before the whirring throne. Let tools be slaves that lift the soul on high, Not masters turning flesh to circuits grown. For only he who struggles, doubts, and bleeds Can touch the eternal chord that never dies; All else is clever dust the tempest heeds, And vanishes when true suns grace the skies.

[Intro] (Instrumental buildup)[Verse 1] From Gemma’s forge to ERNIE’s lightning flight, The mortal hand now wields Promethean fire; Unsloth quantizes giants into night, That even paupers’ laptops may aspire. Yet harken, dreamer, to the iron law: Each shortcut won exacts a hidden cost, For when the soul grows fat on silicon straw, The living lyre within grows pale and lost.
[Chorus] O silicon gods in binary rain, What have we traded for your facile might? The blood, the doubt, the purifying pain, That forged the soul and set the spirit bright! Though tools may serve and engines race ahead, Let not the flame of mortal longing die, For only he who bleeds can raise the dead, And wake the gods that in true humans lie!
[Verse 2] In browsers old as Chrome, new Zen arose, A rebel crown of code and whispered thought; No longer chained to corporate iron prose, The coder dances where his spirit sought. But every tool that lightens weary days Erodes the muscle trained by ancient toil; We trade the sculptor’s sweat for facile praise, And call the bargain progress, not despoil.

So, setting up for a medicore one is a much bigger deal than most people realize. I know countless of people who open Edge or Safari for the first time on their shiny new Windows laptops and MacBooks, and well, never bother looking any further. They just accept whatever comes pre-installed and move on with their lives without realizing just how many options there are (beyond Chrome). I've cycled through practically every browser there is. When agentic AI browsers were breaking headlines, I lived in them for weeks. I've daily-driven Firefox, Opera, Vilvadi, Chrome, Safari, Dia, Brave — you name it. There was a point where I was paying $20/month for Opera Neon just because it impressed me so much (which goes to s... I have learned to test before forming an opinion. Google released Gemma 4 on April 2, 2026. Four model sizes, Apache 2.0 license, built from the same research as Gemini 3. The headlines focused on benchmarks and multimodal capabilities. What I wanted to know was simpler….. Is it actually useful for Python development and how does it compare to the models I already use every day? I spent a week testing Gemma 4 on real Python tasks. Here is the honest answer. WHAT GEMMA 4 ACTUALLY IS Before the comparison, it helps to understand what makes Gemma 4 different from previous open models. Gemma 4 comes in four sizes.
