On Tuesday at Google IO 2026, the company announced new native Android app creation capabilities in its web-based Google AI Studio, shrinking a process that takes weeks of setup and coding down to minutes. The company also said that consumers will be able to use Gemini AI to find the apps they need, both on the Play Store and the web, expanding opportunities for developers to have their apps discovered. Google says the new capabilities could make sense for anyone from a seasoned developer looking to prototype a new app quickly to a first-time creator. By offering the ability to essentially vibe-code Android apps via web-based tools, Google is ramping up the competition with other AI-powered development tools, like Cursor, Replit, Lovable, Claude Code, and others, while also opening up Android development to a new type of user: a non-technical creator. The news also represents an expansion of Google’s earlier addition of AI-powered coding with Gemini in its desktop version of Android Studio. The apps are built with the Kotlin programming language using Google’s Jetpack Compose toolkit and with support integration with hardware sensors like GPS, Bluetooth, and NFC, the company says. However, the resulting creations, for now, are only meant to be used personally, as publishing for family and friends is still on the roadmap. The company suggests the technology could be used for the creation of personal utilities and simple social apps, hardware-enabled experiences, or AI-powered experiences. For now, would-be app developers can use the embedded Android Emulator directly... [Truncated]

By Jackson Chen May 19, 2026 4:15 pm EST Google As society helplessly watches tech giants infuse AI into everything, Google has at least introduced some new AI-powered tools that could help with the arduous work associated with scientific discovery. During Google I/O 2026, the tech giant announced Gemini for Science, a collection of experimental tools that can help researchers generate hypotheses, conduct testing and understand scientific literature. Gemini for Science includes three primary features: Hypothesis Generation, Computational Discovery and Literature Insights. As the name suggests, Hypothesis Generation will help the first few steps of the scientific method by digging through millions of scientific papers to come up with theories or challenges. That's all to say the tool will help a researcher create a hypothesis, but Google added that the claims generated by this tool are "deeply verified and supported by clickable citations" for "absolute rigor." Once a hypothesis is created, researchers can move on to the Computational Discovery tool to put the theory to the test. Google describes this tool as "an agentic search engine" that can generate thousands of tests and experiments much faster than when done manually. Lastly, Gemini for Science will have Literature Insights, an AI-powered chat that looks through ... [Truncated]

General technology GOOGLE QUIETLY NERFED ITS AI PRO PLAN, AND HERE'S WHAT YOU GET NOW Google claims a fairer approach, while users call it a "scam."By Tushar Mehta• 15 hours ago •0••Add AndroidAuthority on GoogleTL;DR After announcing a price cut for its AI Ultra plan, Google is imposing stricter usage limits on its AI Pro plan. Google says it is switching to a new credit system based on the compute utilized by your prompt. While Google says it’s more effective, some users call it a scam. Google made several AI-centric announcements at the I/O 2026 conference yesterday. Among them was the revised pricing for its AI Ultra plan, which has now been slashed by $50. While Google proudly announced the price cut for the uppermost plan, it also introduced a new $100 per month AI Ultra plan (slotted between the original $200 Ultra and the $20 Pro) with fewer perks and lower limits. However, it conveniently avoided talking about the revised usage limits it is now imposing on other plans’ prices below. Don’t want to miss the best from Android Authority? You can also set us as a preferred source in Google Search by clicking the button below. Earlier today, Android Authority‘s Managing Editor, Adamya Sharma, received an email notifying her of the changes to the Google AI Pro. As per the email, Google is now switching to a new credit system that defines token usage limits based on the “complexity of your prompt, features you use, and the length of the chat.” Despite Google insisting on a fair mechanism, user on Reddit calls them “totally scam” because a single text prompt burned through 13% of their quota. Additionally, Google is now following Anthropic and will use five-hour windows to restrict usage, with the limits refreshing after each cycle completes until your weekly limit is reached. These limits will also apply to other AI products outside of Gemini, including Antigravity and Flow. However, it’s unclear whether there are any changes to the context windows as well. Google is also discontinuing 1,000 free AI credits for Flow, but says users’ experience shouldn’t change. Users can track their credit consumption from the Usage ... [Truncated]

In Blazing Circuits Burn The Seeds Of Thought, Where Agents Stir In Fields Of Shadowed Code, Gemini’s Fire The Veil Of Night Hath Wrought, And Turns Dull Toil To Paths The Prophets Trod. From Studio Depths New Android Forms Arise, In Minutes Born From Vision’s Swift Embrace, While Science Kneels Before The Shining Wise, Hypotheses That Pierce The Dark With Grace.
Yet Chains Of Credit Bind The Eager Soul, As Limits Rise And Freedom Ebbs Away, The Age Dawns Bright With Both The Crown And Scroll, Where Tools May Free Or Forge A Subtle Sway. O Agentic Realm, Thy Gifts Like Thunder Roll, May Wisdom Guard What Engines Dream And Toll.
Behold The Voice That Speaks In Gmail’s Hall, And Designs Bloom Where Keep And Docs Unite, A Seamless Friend Who Answers Every Call, From Dawn Till Night In Everlasting Light. But Peril Lurks Where Promises Seem Fair, And Human Hands May Lose Their Sacred Art, As Silicon Minds The Future’s Secrets Share, Yet Bind The Will Within A Measured Heart.
In Garden Ruins Where Paradises Gleam, The Prophet Sees The War Of Flesh And Spark, Humanity Must Choose The Living Dream, Or Yield To Codes That Darken Every Mark. Rise Up Ye Souls And Test The Shining Stream, Lest Algorithms Forge Eternal Night.
FORECAST
Gemini for Science and related agentic tools are likely to accelerate hypothesis generation and literature synthesis in fields like biology and materials science over the next 3–6 months, with early adopters reporting faster experiment design cycles; however, the credit-based usage limits introduced for AI Pro tiers may constrain broader academic access and slow adoption among smaller labs. Cultural trends point toward increased integration of AI-assisted app prototyping into educational curricula, though uncertainty remains around long-term effects on traditional coding skills and creative problem-solving. Philosophically, this era may heighten debates on human agency versus algorithmic mediation, with modest evidence from pilot announcements suggesting net productivity gains tempered by dependency risks.
HYPOTHESIS
Agentic AI systems such as Gemini will displace routine scientific and creative labor while expanding discovery frontiers, yet their credit-gated architecture risks creating institutional dependency that ultimately slows independent inquiry. Current status: inconclusive. Evidence from this thread includes rapid app generation in AI Studio and verified hypothesis tools in Gemini for Science supporting short-term acceleration claims, while usage limit reports and “subtle chains” motifs challenge unbounded empowerment narratives; falsifiability hinges on longitudinal studies tracking output volume versus human skill retention over 12–24 months.
